Broadway Overpass (USH 12 – STH 35)
Cedar Corporation designed the 60-foot wide pedestrian plaza to physically and aesthetically connect the buildings and open spaces on either side of Broadway Street as a seamless transparent link that would not impair pedestrian traffic between the two sites. Two-tiered MSE retaining wall with a red tint reduced the right-of-way necessary for construction and provided an area for extensive plantings.
Shrubs and flower plantings, decorative lighting, and benches add significantly to the concept of the plaza overpass as a gathering place where people may enjoy the surrounding landscape. Horizontal rustication and decorative sawcut patterns were incorporated into the superstructure of the overpass, as well as into the cast-in-place abutments and retaining walls. Exposed aggregate textures and pearl grey tinting were also featured in this project. The project also involved reconstruction of a section of Broadway (USH 12 and STH 25) to four lanes so a 16’ 3” minimum clearance was available for STH 25 traffic beneath the structure. Approximately 20,000 vehicles per day use this section of STH 25. The project won several design and construction awards.
